BREAKING: Joe Sylvester resigns from 5th District Republican Executive Committee
Written by Michigan CR on March 2, 2008 –
Michigan CR had just been informed that Joe Sylvester has resigned from the 5th District GOP. Sylvester was running for the State Committee post vacated by Bill Kelly. Sylvester put out the following attacking his opponent:
Subject: The Truth About Patrick Portman
* Patrick Portman is a right wing hatemonger with an anti-catholic agenda.
* He claims to be in touch with the Republican party, but really he is an ant-homosexual hypocrite that attacks Republicans who never attack him first. What makes it worse: he hides behind God to do it.
* Patrick Portman is not a uniter, he’s a hate mongering divider: the kind that fits in well with Fred Phelps from Westboro Baptist Church who blames homosexuals for 9/11 and protests soldiers funderals-all because it’s God’s will.
*Patrick Portman is not a man we need for the 5th District. He will turn the Republican Party into an organization not run on logic and Republican values, but an organization run purely by God.
*Don’t vote for Patrick Portman for 5th District State Committee. Vote for a Real Republican.” .
After the attack was issued the 5th District GOP was prepared to assemble a censure committee to deal with Sylvester. Below is an email sent out by the 5th District Chairman:
Joe sylvester tendered his resignation last night without the requirement for assembling a censure committee. Assembling such a committee would have prolonged this painful process even further, and done nothing to elect more Republicans, but was in the formative stages already Thursday night. I’m sure the threat of such a committee forming influenced Joe’s decision to resign. At this point there are four openings on the Fifth district committee and two on state committee. The appropriate county chairs are already seeking replacements for those seats. Those seats will be filled at the next regular fifth district committee meeting in March at Genessee county HQ.
Please feel free to contact me if there are other questions or issues.
Thank You.
Eric Klammer
5th district chair
Sylvester has been self-destructive for some time. According to those close to the story this is Joe’s grand finale in the world of Michigan politics.

On Romney…
Written by Michigan CR on February 5, 2008 –“It has to be disappointing for the Romney campaign to spend so much gold for yet another silver,” McCain spokesman Brian Rogers told Mike Allen. “West Virginia Republicans … proved again that you can’t buy an election.”
“I’m sorry, I thought the Romney campaign sent out something (on Monday) saying there’s no whining in politics,” Saltsman told ABC’s Jake Tapper. “He got beat — period. Once again showing that Gov. Romney’s millions of dollars can’t buy the election.”

Ben Morlock, MSU Chair, comments on SOTU
Written by Michigan CR on January 30, 2008 –Still others supported Bush and his vision for the country. Ben Morlock, president of the MSU College Republicans, said history will “judge (Bush) more fairly.”
Morlock credits Bush with guiding America through the uncharted area of international terrorism, which will give the president a “legacy.”
“He’s been directly on point when it comes to the defense of the nation because we’re dealing with a threat like we’ve never dealt with before,” Morlock said. “I’m just happy we have somebody with such great resolve and comprehensive understanding of the issue as our commander in chief.”

Zatkoff Supports Free Markets, Free Trade
Written by Michigan CR on January 30, 2008 –The Michigan Student Assembly has started an initiative that would encourage student groups to buy their apparel from unionized factories.
Some student groups, though, will likely stick with traditional apparel-ordering options. LSA junior Justin Zatkoff, chairman of the Michigan Federation of College Republicans, said the price of the shirts will still be an overriding factor for many student groups.
“We should never boycott workers in a third world country who might be starving otherwise,” he said. “Whoever gives me the best price is who I would go for. Let the free market decide.”

Spell-check gaffe: You type Obama, Microsoft inserts Osama
Written by Michigan CR on January 30, 2008 –There’s a glitch, of sorts, with the popular Microsoft Word program that is starting to seriously irk those who follow politics, especially those who like Senator Barack Obama. Type in the word “Obama” and it comes up as a misspelling. Ask Word to suggest a word and it presents “Osama.”
Not good, say readers like Susan Kurtzman, of Birmingham, who e-mailed me her frustration: “Mr. Wendland… Something is making me crazy. Every time I type in “Obama” my spell check wants to change it to “Osama”. How in the heck do you get Microsoft to add a name/word to their master list,” she asks.
I’m using the latest version of Office — Office 2008 for Macintosh — and sure enough, it thinks I mean Osama when I type in Obama. This version I’m using came out two weeks ago, so I’m surprised the program’s standard dictionary hasn’t expunged the gaffe. I wonder how older versions treat the name?
For Susan and others irritated by this, the way to fix it is pretty easy. Look at the image accompanying this post up at the top right.
Scroll down and you’ll see the word “Add.” Click that it it should add “Obama” to your own dictionary. If your display doesn’t show this, click on help on on the top menubar of the Word document. You might also want to turn off automatic spell checking, if the program automatically and erroneously inserts the word it thinks you mean. That’s done in the preferences setting of the program itself.
Supporters of the Illinois senator already have had to contend with critics who snidely like to compare the candidate’s name to that of the famous missing terrorist. And with a middle name of Hussein, the senator doesn’t need any extra grief from a computer program.
